Dental Sealants for Children
Even with good brushing and flossing, it can be hard for kids to clean every tiny groove on their back teeth (molars). These chewing surfaces are the most common places for cavities to start. That’s where dental sealants come in!
What Are Sealants?
A dental sealant is a thin, protective coating that is painted onto the chewing surface of the back teeth. Once hardened, it creates a smooth barrier that keeps food and bacteria out of the deep grooves where cavities often form.
The Sealant Process
Applying a sealant is:
-
Quick – usually just a few minutes per tooth
-
Painless – no shots, drilling, or removal of tooth structure
-
Comfortable – kids often say it feels just like getting their teeth painted
Steps include:
-
Teeth are cleaned and dried.
-
A gentle solution is applied to prepare the surface.
-
The liquid sealant is brushed on.
-
A special light hardens the sealant into a strong, protective shield.
Benefits of Sealants
-
Help prevent cavities in hard-to-reach areas
-
Protect teeth during the cavity-prone years (ages 6–14)
-
Can last several years with proper care
-
Provide extra protection while children are still mastering brushing and flossing
Who Needs Sealants?
Sealants are most often recommended for:
-
Permanent molars (usually erupting around ages 6 and 12)
-
Children at higher risk for tooth decay
By adding sealants, we can give your child’s teeth an extra layer of defense and keep their smile healthier, longer.
